Dog-Friendly Birthday Cake Recipe

Anyone else an official crazy dog (or cat) lady that throws a birthday party for your pet every year? Both of our pups are officially 8 years old! And we celebrate their birthdays every year with some form of cake or special cookies. I usually make them this dog-friendly birthday cake though, because I don’t always have time to trek to the specialty pet shop that has a happy birthday dog cookie covered in carob. And I don’t like the options offered at the big chain pet stores.

This cake is super easy to make and has all dog-friendly, and approved, ingredients. You can eat it too, but it’s pretty bland for human tastebuds. You can even alter it a little and cover it completely in the icing, or drizzle some carob over it. Let me know if you make it for your pup, and how they like it (which they will)!

Dog-Friendly Birthday Cake

This cake is sure to be a hit among your furry friends, and all the ingredients are pet-safe!
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1 Tbsp. honey
  • 1/4 cup shredded carrots (optional)

Icing

  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup plain greek yogurt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F
  • Whisk the wet ingredients in a large bowl.
  • Add in the flour and baking soda and stir until well combined. It will be a thick consistency.
  • If you want to add the shredded carrots, fold them into the batter.
  • Split the batter into two greased 4″ cake pans. Because it’s a pretty thick batter, you may need to shake the pans on the counter to level it out.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Let the cakes cool for a few minutes and flip them onto a cooling rack to completely cool before icing
  • To make icing: mix greek yogurt and peanut butter
  • Assembly: Place one of the cooled cakes onto final plate/stand, and ice the top with half of the icing. If cake has a very round top, you may need to cut the top off to make it flat for top piece to sit on. Then place the other cake on top and ice the top with the rest of the icing. Add some dog treats on top or lining the edges.
  • Serve: Depending on your dog’s size, you may want to slice the cake into several servings. (We give each of our large dogs a quarter serving at a time)

XO
