I truly believe there’s no way to actually prevent stretch marks because they are based on your genetics, however, I do believe you can help lessen the severity if you take care of your skin and stay hydrated! I started getting stretch marks in my first trimester before I even gained any weight! I actually didn’t gain any weight the entire first trimester, so I was shocked when I saw some “stretchies” (thanks for that word, Chrissy Teigen). I guess even though I wasn’t gaining weight, my body was still changing, which was obvious when certain clothes were no longer fitting.
Anyway, as I was looking for lotions to use after I got pregnant, I noticed so many of the “cocoa butter” lotions in stores are mostly just water and chemicals, and there’s some cocoa or shea butter half way through the ingredients. Then I remembered that I pinned this belly butter recipe long before I was even pregnant, it’s from JelliBeanJournals, and I’ve been using it twice daily since about 10 weeks. I’ve noticed a few more stretch marks showing up, but like I said, I don’t think anyone can prevent them, but I do believe this concoction has helped keep my skin well-hydrated so they aren’t as severe. I store mine in a mason jar and just take a little scoop out with my hand. Make sure you give your skin a little time to dry after applying the belly butter, otherwise it may make your clothes look wet.
Natural Hydrating Pregnancy Belly Butter Recipe
- 6 Tbsp. Organic Coconut Oil (here)
- 6 Tbsp. Pure Cocoa Butter (here)
- 6 Tbsp. Pure Shea Butter (here)
- 6 Tbsp. Almond Oil (here)
- 4 tsp. Beeswax (here)
First, melt cocoa butter and beeswax in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring frequently. It will only take a few seconds to melt. Next, add the rest of the ingredients and stir until fully melted. Finally, pour mixture into your storage container of choice and let it cool for awhile before putting the lid on. It will thicken as it cools, making it easier to apply.
Warning: When applying this belly butter, it will make your hands very oily, I recommend rinsing with warm water and soap, it may take a couple rinses to feel like it’s off your hands.
What’s your go-to to try to combat stretch marks?

I couldn’t agree more! What we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put in them, especially when we’re pregnant. Thank you!

If you add in a little bit of arrowroot powder you will get less of that greasy feeling after applying.
